Kampung Kuantan fireflies


Kampung Kuantan is know for its fireflies (or Kelip-kelip, as it fondly called by the local) that dwell along Sg Selangor river banks and feeding on the Berembang trees (mangrove trees) that grow well in brackish water. The mangrove trees with its scientific name, Sonneratia Casolaris, can be found until 8 km upstream and 18 km downstream to Kuala Selangor.

A trip to Kuala Selangor would be incomplete without exploring the uniqueness and miracles of the Kuantan Village Fireflies found in the midst of mangrove trees in this small villages. Visitors would experience riding on a traditional sampan (small boat) down the Selangor River and observe the fireflies in close proximity. 

Kampung Kuantan is located about nine kilometres from the town of Kuala Selangor, the site is know as one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. Take a small boat into the quite darkness at night and you might find yourself amazingly enthralled by the thousands of fireflies (Kelip-Kelip) that flicker. At dust , the fireflies (Kelip-Kelip) gather in Berembang trees (mangrove trees) to feed on its tree sap and flash to attract a mate. Although both the male and female species light up, only the males do it together in union.


Boats can be chartered at the jetty of Kampung Kuantan for these nocturnal tours. Viewing time starts from sundown at 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm. There is ample pacrking space for visitors amd a good information centre where you can also obtain souvenirs. Each boat holds 4 passengers and cost RM 40 per boat. The ticket include a drink and a packet of local snacks.
